Switching from virgin to recycled polyethylene terephthalate in retail packaging can reduce carbon emissions by up to 79 percent. Adding recycled high-density polyethylene can reduce packaging emissions by up to 71 percent. These aren’t projections: they’re material science outcomes available to any retailer willing to specify them in their supplier contracts.
The gap between what’s technically possible and what most retailers are actually doing is significant. Here’s how to close it.
Start With Material Specifications, Not Aspirations
75% of consumers say they’re willing to pay more for sustainable packaging, according to a 2020 Environment + Energy Leader survey. The business case is there. What gets in the way is usually a lack of specificity: sustainability goals that aren’t translated into material specifications that suppliers can actually fulfill.
Recyclable packaging isn’t a single material: it’s a category with wide variation in environmental performance. Recycled paper and cardboard are the most straightforward: FSC certification verifies responsible sourcing, and the recycling infrastructure is well established. For plastics, recycled PET and HDPE have the most developed supply chains and the clearest carbon reduction credentials.
The most actionable move for most retailers: audit your top five packaging categories by volume, identify the current material for each, and specify the recycled-content alternative with a target percentage and a certification requirement. Then put that specification in your next supplier review.
Design for End-of-Life First
Most packaging decisions are made for the product’s shipping and presentation phase, with end-of-life treated as someone else’s problem. The retailers doing this well design in the opposite direction: starting with what happens to the packaging when the customer is done with it, then working backward to the design.
The practical questions: Is this material accepted by curbside recycling in the markets where you sell? If not, does your customer have realistic access to drop-off recycling? If neither, the recyclability claim on your packaging is technically true but functionally meaningless.
Lush (UK), Rituals (Netherlands), and Elate Cosmetics (Canada) have all built reusable packaging systems (where containers are returned, cleaned, and refilled rather than discarded). This is more operationally complex than recyclable packaging, but it’s the model that keeps materials in use at their highest value longest.
For e-commerce specifically: eliminate oversize boxes (right-size your packaging to the product), reduce fill materials, and consolidate split shipments. These moves reduce waste and shipping costs simultaneously: a straightforward double win.
The fastest way to make your packaging more sustainable is to use less of it. Every packing peanut you eliminate is waste you didn’t have to recycle, compost, or apologize for.
Communicate Specifically or Don’t Communicate
The consumer communication piece is where most brands either add real value or actively damage trust. Generic claims like “eco-friendly packaging” or “sustainably sourced materials” without supporting specifics are increasingly triggering greenwashing scrutiny, including from regulators in the US, UK, and EU.
What works: specific, verifiable claims. “Made from 80% post-consumer recycled content.” “Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.” “Packaging fully recyclable via standard curbside collection.” These statements can be verified, don’t overpromise, and give conscious consumers actual information.
What doesn’t work: aspirational language without backing, certification logos without explanation, or claims about recyclability that assume ideal disposal conditions.
Adding a QR code to packaging that links to your full material sourcing and recyclability information is low cost, highly credible, and increasingly expected by the customers who actually read packaging.
